Home Networking

Hi all here's hoping you can help me out here.
I have a home network running in my house, X P home SP3 (all wireless). Is there a way I can remotely shut down a pc ( for example my kids ) I have it all set up for folder sharing etc.

But I cannot get them to shut down I have tried the remote shut down ( shutdown -i command ) but nothing happens.

Is it because it is home edition? or because it's not on TS?
Please bear with me as i am kinda new to this lol Smiley
cheers for now Martin

Hi guys,
Thanks for the tips, however I'm still having no joy Sad

I get error message for using command prompt to remotely shut down a pc "network path cant be found" even though I followed the instructions shutdown -m \\computername -r -f, I can see the computer on the network so why is it saying that?

with the program remote shutdown it tells me that I have not got any admin rights on the remote pc even though I have asks me if i want to log on to remote so I try and I get the same message.

any ideas??
again thanks for your help and knowledge
martin

I don't suppose it's a simple as this, but you need to have an administrator account on all machines with the same name AND Password. I've often struggled with this because in the family situation people don't always like passwords., to do this stuff you need one.

Hope that helps

The machines have all got admin accounts with the same password, do they have to be logged on? or can they use their accounts?

could I create their names on the main pc ? the kids ain't got PWs
i guess this is the joys of networking eh...... Roll Eyes

I think the main PC will need to be logged in with an administrator username, and password which also exists on the kids PCs though the kids PC could be logged in with their own username. If you don't have this arrangement I think that may be why you are not getting access to their machines, but are still seeing them.

Hope that works for you.  Smiley

If you really need to use your network to shut down their PC and the routes tried aleady are not sucessful you could use remote desktop and shut it down that way.

You could also use an applications like VNC or similar to it which will allow you acess desktop without too much trouble.

Remote shutdown on a home network (I am assuming you do not have a domain controller) will require your account on your computer to have admin rights on the machines you want to shut down.

It is not enough to have the same username and password. What you will need to do, whilst having the computers turned on and logged into an admin account is as follows:

1) Open the Administrator Tools and Computer Management.
2) Open 'Local Users and Groups'
3) Right click on the 'Administrators' group and click on 'Properties'.
4) Click the 'Add' button
5) Add your account from the PC you will use to shut the others down (see below for details).

You will need to add your login account in the format:

\\computername\username

So if you have 4 computers named

Home01
Home02
Home03
Home04

and you would be using the computer Home02 yourself to remotely shutdown the others with your login of say: Martin2008 you would add the following to the Administrators group of the other computers:

\\Home02\Martin2008

Providing you can then ping the computers across the network you can send the command

shutdown -m \\Home01 -s      (to shutdown the computer Home01)

shutdown -m \\Home01 -r       (to restart the computer Home01)

Hope this helps.

Regards,
Michael
