Deploying Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2)

If you use RemoteScope (Micro 2000’s networking software) to install Windows XP SP2 you can upgrade all, or selected XP clients, without having to physically access the PC. Just follow the steps below.

RemoteScope offers network administrators the ability to remotely deploy new applications, updates, or security patches to every client PC on the network throughout the organization. You can deploy in real time or schedule it for unattended operation any time, day or night.

If you would like more information about upgrading to Windows XP SP2 and how to configure it for RemoteScope, please see our Tech Tip: RemoteScope™ and Windows XP Service Pack 2 in the tech tip area of the Micro 2000 web site.

Getting Started

Go to Microsoft’s website then download and install Windows XP SP2

(WindowsXP-KB835935-SP2-ENU.exe)

The SP2 is a self-extracting, executable file. It does not require msiexec to deploy or install and has available built-in command switches. To see the available switches, run the following command in the command prompt.

                    WindowsXP-KB835935-SP2-ENU.exe /?

Creating a Definition File

Step 1: Open the Remotescope console and click Software Distribution. Then choose Product Definition Editor. This will bring up the Product Edit window.

Step 2: From the menu bar, click Product and select New Product Definition. Specify a name for your Product Definition (e.g., DeploySP2). The product definition window allows you to change the settings. For XP Service Pack 2, use the following settings:

Installation file list:

Click Add File. Browse to the location of the WindowsXP-KB835935-SP2-ENU.exe file and click Add. The file should be displayed in the installation file list.

Step 3: Save the Product Definition.

Creating a Distribution Mode

A Distribution Mode determines what command RemoteScope will execute once the file is transferred to the client machine.

Step 1: Click Product and choose New Distribution Mode. Specify a name for the Distribution Mode (e.g., DeploySP2) and click OK.

Step 2: The product definition displays the ff options:

Mode Name:

DeploySP2

Installation Source Files:

Select Transfer Files (from Installation File List) and install.

Command Line:

WindowsXP-KB835935-SP2-ENU.exe /passive /quiet /forcerestart

*Note: The /passive /quiet /forcerestart switches allow SP2 to be installed in unattended mode (no user interaction or display) and will restart the computer after installation.

OS Supported:

Windows XP

Comments:

Step 3: Save the Product Distribution Mode and exit.

You are now ready to deploy Windows Service Pack 2 for XP. You have the options to deploy the service pack immediately or set a schedule.
